Buying a New Guitar – Tips
May 6th, 2009 by admin
Guitars – custom guitars are still made today. The video above gives you a bit of history about hand made guitars over the last 40 years. Most guitar players won’t need to buy a custom or handmade guitar (and most can’t afford to). There are good guitars that are made by the top manufacturers that are sold at reasonable prices.
Whether you are a beginner guitar player or an experienced guitarist…
Maybe this is going to be your first guitar, or you are buying a better guitar (upgrading). Or, you may be wanting a different style of guitar or are just adding another instrument to a collection.
No matter your reason for buying a new guitar, do your research and homework first. The best places to do this research is in guitar shops, guitar magazines and, of course, check what is available online. With these three ways to research you can find out more about guitars’ current prices and the variety of brands and styles. You can also read many online blogs with great information about guitars and guitar lessons.
Read manufacturers information about their guitars, read musician’s guitar reviews, and ask friends about which guitars they like. If there are local music stores in your town, visit those stores and test out their guitars. Don’t worry about whether you play well, you just need to try different styles and brands to see which suits you best. Hold the guitar out straight and look down the fretboard to make sure it is not warped or bowed.
Play it first before you buy a guitar!
When you try out a guitar that you might want to buy, when you strum there should not be a buzzing sound. When you try to press the strings down, check to see that they are not too far away from the fretboard.
To check an electric guitar, be sure to be plugged into an amplifier to check the sound and tone controls – make sure they work properly. Check the pickups and the tone and volume controls. Most music stores have a salesperson that can play a guitar – have them play something on a few guitars. Better yet, bring along a friend who is a guitar player for them to give you a second opinion.
Learning the price ranges for new guitars will help you know better which guitars will fit within your budget. Before negotiating on prices with a store sales clerk, you need to know the current information and prices about several guitar brands. It’s their job to persuade you to spend money – and they are usually very skilled at making you spend more than you planned to.
If this is your first guitar, you probably should not consider buying your instrument in an online auction.Auctions are a poor choice for buying any musical instrument, due to the fact that you can’t play it and see how it plays and hear how it sounds. How a guitar feels to hold and play is a very personal thing. Keep your goal in mind and stick to a budget to find that guitar that has a good sound and is the perfect fit for you and your guitar playing needs.
