Why do people become addicted? What is the fundamental mechanism? Of course, this question has been answered to varying degrees and in varying ways. Whether you consider the physical aspects of addiction where changes occur in the brain, or the psychological mechanism that triggers an addiction many theories already exist.

This article is strictly my opinion. It is my personal attempt to understand addiction and I don’t claim to have any scientific backing for my model of addiction. Nor do I seek any. I’m merely trying to understand addiction in terms that make sense to me personally. If this is useful to you in some way, then so much the better.

Addiction can be a powerful force in our lives. I hold that addiction occurs with each of us to varying degrees. Drug and alcohol addictions are the most obvious to us because their destructive effects are very evident. But what about those addictions that are not so obvious. Do you have a favorite food? A favorite song? Why do we choose one thing over another? Why do people choose differently?

On a purely physical realm it appears that our brains become stimulated in a certain way that we enjoy and therefore we are left with a memory that is pleasurably associated with a certain stimulus such as a sound or a taste or a sensation. Could this be the basis for addiction?

Since we are beings with an organic component, this makes complete sense. Once an impression is made on us it is either postivive or negative and we have a ‘feeling’ that goes with that. Being creatures that enjoy pleasure over pain we naturally seek to relive positive experiences and avoid negative ones.

Therefore, if we had an experience that triggered a negative feeling, such as the taste of garlic, then we may forever hate the taste of garlic. Yet, someone else’s early experience or experiences with garlic may have been quite pleasurable. Therefore, they actually enjoy the taste and smell of garlic even to the point that they always use it or cook with it.

Being similar in our organic components, how can such divergent reactions occur?
The only differential seems to be the original experience itself and how we reacted to it. That experience and reaction creates a record in our brains. This must be how two different brains can have such different reactions to the same substance or experience.

Then are we at the mercy of our first experience in regards to any particular stimuli?
Yes, if we don’t do anything about it. However, if we really exert our will, we should be able to change our reaction to virtually anything.

Therefore, through exertion of willpower an addiction, any addiction, should be defeatable. Of course, things are not necessarily that simple in the real world. But in principle and in my opinion, it seems to be this way.

Otherwise, we would simply be robots at the mercy of these addictions that exist to varying degrees. I think most people would agree that is not the case. Also, it would contradict the gift of freewill that I believe we all have been granted. There are some things that we don’t get to choose in this life yet there are many things that we may exert our personal choice over. I believe that addiction is one of those things we can choose not to have. Maybe it takes hard work to beat an addiction but I think we do have an option in this regard.

If I’m correct, then the most important component to beating an addiction is the willingness to do so, coupled by the intensity of the desire to beat the addiction. It seems certain that the person must be willing at some level to be rid of an addiction in order for that freedom to occur.

In 1931 she took a stab at writing a mystery. Her first novel in the series “A Man Lay Dead” introduced the world to London’s Chief Superintendent Roderick Alleyn. Alleyn comes from the very upper crust of England’s society. His brother (obviously older brother) is a Lord.

Timeless

Her books truly do seem quite timeless. She wrote mysteries that are consistently good, with characters that seem real. Even when reading one of Marsh’s books in the early 21st century, you find that you can connect with the action. The characters do not seem faded with time.

Her mysteries are true puzzles. She didn’t spring last minute details into her plots, making it possible for the reader to play detective while reading the books.

The videos are more chilling than any horror movie. They were only designed to be shown if a nuclear strike was deemed likely within 72 hours. If you had ever seen these programmes broadcast for real, then your own death would be virtually imminent. By this stage military planners assumed that Soviet tank armies would have overwhelmed Allied forces in a short, conventional war on the north German plain and escalation to atomic warfare would be the only remaining military option.

The films were produced in 1980 and cover the basics of survival: constructing a fall-out shelter, building an inner refuge, hoarding enough drinking water and food for two weeks. Bring a child’s teddy bear, and games, and books. Just hold on for two weeks.

As the years went buy Charlie grew older and Tom and Mary’s marriage kept growing stronger. It was now 1969 and Tom had become a Professor of History at the University and he was working on writing a book. The year 1969 was a year of wonder with man landing on the moon and it also was a year of trouble and strife with the war in Vietnam and the protests at home. In 1973 Tom turned 50 and his book “Homeward Journey” was published. It was a story about war veterans coming home. Tom himself had close friends from two wars that did not make it home. Tom and Mary now had a little more disposable income and decided to take a vacation to Tahiti. It was now 1978 and they had been married for 20-years so they felt they deserved the vacation. The next year, 1979, when Charlie turned 18, he joined the Air Force. He applied to Officers Candidate School (OCS) and was accepted. After he became a 2nd Lieutenant he applied for Flight School. It wasn’t easy getting accepted even with his father’s service. But he eventually got accepted. The Flight School took a little over a year and it was hard work. Tom was so proud of him when he received his pilot’s wings. Charlie learned how to fly an F-15 Eagle and was stationed at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia. Then in August of 1990 he was deployed to Saudi Arabia for Operation Desert Shield. Tom thought that things had now come full circle

Why is it that some people can achieve astounding personal and professional success at a young age? Why is it that other people seem to spend their lives languishing on the sidelines, watching their existence distilled into a series of unmet deadlines and unfulfilled dreams? It is because the first person learned the importance of the laws of attraction while the second person scoffed at the ideas that the laws of attraction espouse. If you want to have a happy and successful life, keep your mind open to the laws of attraction.

The laws of attraction are more than just a single rule. It is an entirely new way to live your life. It hinges on your self-perception. This may seem like a simple concept, but to truly find the core of your self-perception you have to be willing to take the time to delve deep within yourself.

The law of attraction is not something that you can find in a judicial tome. It also has nothing to do with being physically attractive to the opposite sex. The laws of attraction are collectively a mindset that creates an aura of happiness and success around you.

This aura influences others’ perception of you and they will then act accordingly. In general, if someone perceives you be smart and successful they will give you the tools and opportunities to capitalize on your strengths, thereby multiplying them. But don’t wait for someone else to notice your worth, you need to create your own worth from the bottom up.

Take a walk or spend an hour in the bathtub with your phone on silent. Think about what you like about yourself and what you wish you could change.

After you have spent a good deal of quality time getting to know yourself, you need to start thinking of yourself in a positive light. This can actually be a very hard task. We are our own best critics. Traits that we would never even notice in other people become a blight on our self-perception. In order to utilize the laws of attraction we need to become attractive to ourselves.

Once all of your negative qualities are rephrased so that they can be in the positive quality column it is time to move onto the next step of the laws of attraction. Take your newfound positive self-image and project it outward. Act as though you are successful and confident. Surprisingly, if you truly believe all those positive traits you found out about yourself, the people around you will also view you in a positive light.

After all this hard work laying the foundation, the laws of attraction are surprisingly simple. If you view yourself as a good, hardworking person, other people will also view you in that light. If you feel you are the best qualified for a job, then your potential employer may also think that way. Harness the power of positive thinking to change the way others see you. The laws of attraction are your stepping stone to the path of success.

For the sake of presenting an idea, let’s postulate that there is in the world, an elite. Relax; I’m not going to start expounding on yet another conspiracy theory. Let’s just suppose that the existence of such an elite is inevitable and a natural part of the human experience.

The ability to perceive such communications, and thereby of belonging to this ”elite”, has nothing to do with fame, money, power, heritage or any of the criteria normally associated with being part of an elite. The only requirement for belonging in fact, odd as it may sound, is the ability to communicate at a subtle level. To do this, it would be necessary first to perceive the nuances behind the obvious in the world around us.

These subtle nuances which can be interpreted and therefore can be considered a form of communication would have two possible forms, accidental (or natural) and intentional (or artificial.) The easiest to approach would be the natural form; you could call it a byproduct of events or human nature. Examples can readily be found in history or in the case of our example, in genealogy.

A well educated, prosperous clan in 17^th century Lorraine which is today a part of France, obtains from the ruler of that land, the title of nobility. For several generations, the family had bred and trained war horses for the duke. That service was highly valued and resulted in the title. Because documents attesting to the family’s story are vulnerable to decay and loss, tracing it from the perspective of several centuries later can be a difficult thing. However, the record can still be found in other forms.

In this case, it was a name that was taken as a nom-de-guerre or “war name” which passed from father to son for five generations. These nom-de-guerre’s came from a wide variety of sources but could also be chosen by a soldier himself. The name in this case was “Lafantaisie“. It turned out that this was a term used in dressage. A horse that, momentarily, would not obey his master (as though making a break for freedom) was said to be having “a fantasy”.

The profession that had been carried down for so many years in the family led to the adopting of a name that preserved the memory of the family’s history. The realization of the possibilities in following the name led to uncovering other evidence such as given names that repeated themselves through generations. This set up a trail to follow that eventually established the family’s pedigree back to the duchy of Lorraine at the time of the Duke Charles IV.

It’s not exactly original to say that a family’s name can give an indication of some part of its history. In fact, its a common and natural way to research a past through a family’s name; but in this case we’re talking about a nom-de-guerre, something usually overlooked. The reason for looking closely at the name was that it demanded to be considered more closely. It’s as though that was the original intention of choosing it. Its unusual and unique character demanded attention.

Further investigation led to uncovering the story and breathing life back into those ancestors. The name could easily have been overlooked; taken for granted. This is only an elementary example of what I’m trying to get at, but it does set the foundation for defining this “elite communication” that I think is largely overlooked by our modern minds.
