Please spend a few minutes writing down what the words “worthy ideal” mean to you. To me it is my vision of perfection…a vision of how I would ideally like things to be.It is a vision that I find inspiring and energizing!

If your success with guitar is totally dependant on working towards a worthy ideal, doesn’t it make sense that you first need to figure out what YOUR worthy ideal is? How can you progressively realize something if you don’t know what it is? Let’s do some exercises to figure your one out…

Please invest at least a couple of hours doing the following exercises. They will really help you to build a picture of your worthy ideal in your mind’s eye…

Exercise 1:
Try to imagine how you would like to play.Try and imagine what your guitar playing would sound, look and feel like.What kind of guitar techniques are you an expert at? How does your improvising sound? What about your composing? Please write your answers down now.

Exercise 2:
Imagine your ideal guitar playing career. Would you be a expert guitar teacher? What about an amazing performing artist? Or another goal can be performing as part of a highly successful band? How would you like to be an in demand studio guitarist? What do you TRULY want to do? You can write down your answers now.

Exercise 3:
Jot down your ideas for a worthy career in guitar playing. Write it down in the present tense, as if you have already achieved it.Try to condense it down into a one paragraph statement.

If you will invest 5 minutes every morning & night that will help you to reach the goal you want to achieve. This will help you to stay motivated and focused on what you TRULY want.

Clarity is something that you must have. Without it you won’t be able to start developing an effective plan to work towards your worthy ideal.

You may find as you answer the questions that self-doubt starts to creep in. You may doubt whether or not what you write down is even possible! This is normal. Go on and write your answers down anyway. You don’t need to know right now how you will be able to achieve your goal. All you need to do is figure out WHAT it is.

8 Tips to Improve your Sight-Reading of Music

Sight-reading music is a common practice among piano players.  This is when you play a piece of music for the first time, even though it may be unfamiliar to you.  Though it is not common to play a song perfectly the first time through, here are 8 tips to make sight-reading music easier for you.

Tip # 1. Key Signature.  The key signature of the piece of music that you are about to play requires special attention.  Having the correct sharps and flats committed to memory makes your play much smoother and accurate. 

Tip # 2. Time Signature.  This is another basic characteristic of every piece of music that you must understand in order to sight-read.  You will need to know what kind of note gets one beat. One question to always ask is “how many beats in a measure”.

Tip # 3. Changes in Key and Time Signatures.  You need to examine your piece of music to see if the key or time signatures change.  Not knowing about a transition will obviously affect the quality of your play. 

Tip # 4. Starting and Ending Notes.  Starting and Ending notes are excellent reference points for your piano play. Make sure you are familiar with them.

Tip # 5. Note the Rhythm.  Refer to tip # 6 as well. It is easy to play simple melody notes. What makes for a much more interesting sound is the addition of chords, or the rhythm.  As you look through the song, you usually can get an idea of how it will go.  Knowing the rhythm up front makes the whole piece easier to play.

Tip # 6.  Play the Melody First.  Also look through the right hand melody line. It helps to play just the melody first if possible.  This will help give you an idea of the sound of the song and then you can put it all together and you will be able to identify the unique melodic line.

Tip # 7.  Check for Other Markings.  You should know all about loudness/softness, speed, and other technical aspects of music. Check the printed sheets for these markings and make a mental note of them. 

Tip # 8. Relax and Focus. This last tip is so important. Take a deep breath and relax yourself.  Focus on what you are about to play.  Try to play the song all the way through for your first sight-reading.  This gives you a general idea of what the song will sound like.  Later you can break it down and work on each measure or group of measures as you see fit. Keep in mind that we are playing music for the love of it, not as a chore.  

So, why exactly am I suggesting that you learn to sight-read instead of using the “learn-a-bit-at-a-time” method?  Sight-reading forces you to move forward at a faster pace until you finish the song, ultimately helping you learn to play music faster.  You can avoid bad habits of starting and stopping too often and delaying your progress on a specific piece of music.  Sight-reading is an important skill to learn if you wish to become a good piano player.

The club featured several private 12 ft x 12 ft rooms with pillow seating on the floors and busy hostesses to fills drink orders and runs the karaoke machines. These intimate parties attracted a very narrow audience but gradually the patrons began taking a greater interest in American music, particularly with the rise of pop icons in the 1980s. Simultaneously, Americans became fascinated with Japanese anime like Robotech, cartoons like Transformers and video games like Nintendo. So naturally, the karaoke party was poised for widespread acceptance in American culture too.

At the turn of the millennium, karaoke took on a more serious note in American culture. With the advent of shows like “American Idol,” aspiring talent saw the opportunity to sing karaoke as pop star or rock star practice. In the past, the best singers would occasionally receive a standing ovation, a free drink at the bar or a small pot of prize money. Today, however, singers can get recruited by agents hidden in the audience and awarded with lucrative multi-million-dollar contracts.
