Have you always wanted to know how to sing? Have you ever wondered how some people learned how to sing like professionals? Or where tenors get the power for their stunning finales? Have you always dreamed of singing at Broadway?
Like many skills, singing is a gift. With correct training and technique, though, it could be learned. In anything you wanna do, the most important thing is to have the will power to do it. Singing requires as much determination and want as well. Besides that, here are some other things that could help you become a singing sensation in no time:
The Mentor
To learn to sing, you need to look for mentors who could give feedback. Since singing is a performance art, getting feedback is doubly important. A voice coach is important for a potential singer. If you remember American Idol, you see people who believed for the longest time that they had fantastic voices, only to be quashed by Simon Cowell. Believing in your own talent goes a long way but a mentor could pave that way to be smoother for you. A coach is important to help you determine the quality of your voice, the accuracy of your tone, and your voice range. The coach would guide you through as you formally start your singing training. You could also try seeking choirs in church or in school for coaches, where regular trainings and practices are done. Consider singing with a group (like a choir) because it makes learning more holistic.
Breathe
An important part of singing is breathing. Try a simple exercise before vocalizing: first, put your palm on your sternum, that area where the rib cages meet. Do inhales and exhales for a minute, and observe how your lungs would expand and contract. Proper breathing is one of the most underrated yet most important skill that a singer should learn. It could help you learn how to belt and control your voice. You may wanna try holding your breath for a long time, too, as that skill is handy in a lot of songs you’re going to encounter. Remember, some songs would require you to pause or continously deliver the lines without abrupt pauses and taking in of breaths.
Know the notes
Doing your practices with the notes is best done with a group or a choir. You get to really listen to how your voice sounds like and how accurate your tone is. It helps to make you see areas of improvement. There are many drills that could help the singer learn breathing techniques in singing. This could also be done alone; but really, the best way to go about this is to work with a group of people. You may also try checking tones if you happen to play the piano. Try and replicate the sound of basic keys with your voice. Increase and decrease your pitch sequentially to check how you’re doing. If you hit the notes the way the piano does, then you’re on the right track.
Pronunciation
Singing is not only about rhythm and flow, but also about words. Correct pronunciation means a lot in singing. Focus on pronouncing your vowels at every pitch because words are mostly made of alternating vowels and consonants. This is culture-relative, however, since we do not all come with a singular manner of pronunciation, much more, singing. Always listen to the way singers sing their songs, no matter how pop a singer is or how different he or she is from your taste. Having a model helps in training on a certain song and its lyrics.
Knowing your voice, choosing songs
We have heard it a million times, and we will say it again here. To know your song is to know your voice. Many new singers tend to make the mistake of choosing a song that doesn’t fit their vocal range. A coach or a choir can direct you to the type of song that would best work for your voice. While fusion is the key nowadays, some songs just don’t work on some voices. Your voice might’ve improved but your song choice might be bad. It’s not just your taste that you should consider when choosing a song. It is also a way to show your vocal power. A voice has character too. A proper song would display your voice at its best.
Enjoy
A lot of guides tell you what to do and what not to do. Not a lot tell you to enjoy and be passionate. Singing is expression. Whether you’re already a pro or a beginner, what matters is that you enjoy yourself. You don’t have to make practice some kind of task, you could make it enjoyable with a karaoke night. Singing frees the soul and should mainly be enjoyed.
The key to learning how to sing is not just about knowing the technicalities of singing, breathing right, or reaching the right notes—it’s about love and passion for expression, most of all.
